Good Wednesday, community. Here's what happened on March 25 in queer history:
★ 1947 — Sir Elton John is born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex. He would become one of the best-selling music artists in history — and one of the most iconic openly gay figures on the planet. His AIDS activism through the Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised over half a billion dollars. He didn't just entertain the world; he helped save it.
★ 1985 — A landmark Oscars: Vanessa Redgrave becomes the first woman nominated for Best Actress playing a lesbian role (in The Bostonians), and The Times of Harvey Milk wins Best Documentary. The year Harvey Milk finally got his moment on Hollywood's biggest stage.
★ 1983 — Andrew Scott Goldstein is born. He would go on to become the first American male team-sport professional athlete to come out as openly gay during his playing career — a quiet act of courage that opened doors for athletes who followed.
💡 Art, sport, activism — queerness shows up everywhere. And everywhere it shows up, it makes things better.
