Earlier this month, there was a school shooting in Canada, in my own province, which is rare in this country. What makes this story relevant to us is that the shooter was an 18 year old trans woman. After this fact was made known, I didn't want to listen to the news because I worried that conservative media would make trans people look like psycho killers. I was annoyed at the mere fact that they were emphasizing her trans identity like some celebrity scandal. She struggled with mental health. But when I heard her father's statement, I could understand at least a part of the problem. He called himself “biological father,” and said they were estranged from each other. Then I noticed him referring to her as “he.” Whatever mental health problem she had suffered, the father failed to love her unconditionally. So, as I mourn for the victims’ families, my heart aches for what she must have suffered… even in a progressive country that honours diversity as a national policy. 😥
