In 1987, the FDA approved AZT — the first drug ever approved to treat HIV/AIDS. The road to that approval was paved by activists who stormed government buildings, chained themselves to fences, and demanded that bureaucracy move at the speed of a plague. It wasn't a cure. It was a beginning. And people fought and died to make it happen.
